about

Minimalistic drones, tape on Do You Dream of Noise? (www.instagram.com/doyoudreamofnoise/) - file version available on Gates of Hypnos (gatesofhypnos.bandcamp.com/album/paracusia)

"this Swedish newcomer produces ultra minimal drones (based on processed guitars, but you can barely hear that), creating the impression of complete timelessness, of an everlasting atmosphere.... like a bath in cotton wool, gentle and a bit raw at the same time, full of comfortable hissing and resonances... "Paracusia" denotes a form of auditory hallucination (=perceiving sound without auditory stimulus), a very fitting characterization" - Drone Records

"Arguable pros: + The sound design is solid. The album contains two 20-minute songs of minimalistic drone music. The soundscapes have been made using sustained notes from keyboards or other electronic instruments along with thin layers of windy noise and other subtle texture on top. A few of the main notes keep slowly changing, but this happens over the course of several minutes so it's not easy to discern in real time. At times you can also hear subtle background melody underneath the drone, but it's so quiet that it might take multiple listens to catch. Perhaps this is the "paracusia" - aural hallucination - that the album title is referring to. The first track is built around a major chord, but it also features some less harmonic higher tones which contribute an air of tenseness to the whole affair. The second track is more of the same, although slightly more overtly dissonant. It makes me think of some well-lit liminal space with an air of tentative anticipation, like going to the doctor for some test results. Another thing of note about is that the music doesn't have a lot of activity above 3 kHz, and it tends to sound quite mid-heavy.
Arguable cons: - The album doesn't have much of a theme. As mentioned, the title "paracusia" is a medical term for an aural hallucination, but that still doesn't give a lot to go on.
- The album delivers exactly what it promises: it's a compact, 40-minute package of highly minimalistic drone with no strings attached. It's the sort of music that's honestly quite hard to describe for a review because it's essentially just a sound texture to be enjoyed at your own leisure. Personally, I find the tone fairly pleasant and the tense atmosphere makes me feel alarmed. And that's pretty much it. Although I like it, it doesn't exactly inspire devotion...
Overall... Paracusia is around 6 / 10. Only does one thing. Does it really well." - Rateyourmusic.com
